garmin-asus A10

Not to be confused with garminfone or nuviphone M10 Garmin and Asus partnership just announced another Android powered phone called Garmin Asus A10.

Of course its focus is again on GPS navigation; however more so for pedestrians rather than drivers which probably means it’s probably not going to make it to the U.S. where driving almost always takes precedence. The press release actually says it will be available in mid-2010 in Europe and Asia-Pacific.

features a 3.2″ touch screen, electronic compass and a 1500mAh battery. Depending on your location the A10 will contain preloaded maps so you won’t have to rely on a data connection for maps which can be non-existent or just too expensive to use. Of course will also work in your vehicle too – thanks to the powered audio mount.

Some other features of A10 include WebKit browser with multi-touch, 5MP camera with auto-focus, and auto-geotag, built-in accelerometer for horizontal and landscape views.

wifi iPad not worth it

Wired had a short review about the wifi only iPad and they seem to think settling down for the cheaper iPad is not even worth it.

Article says Maps app is one of the “wow” apps and without the A-GPS feature brought along with the 3G module it is not as useful.

It also suggests the iPad can be used an in-vehicle GPS navigation device provided there’s a passenger to actually hold it and type in the address :) We actually lolled at this.

It is possible to achieve a GPS position fix with a WiFi iPad. I don’t mean SkyHook/WiFi positioning. I mean GPS positioning.

How is that possible?

I was like 99% sure that my iPhone was somehow transmitting its GPS positioning to the iPad, but today I did a test to make sure. It turns out I was wrong. I must have been getting some weak WiFi positioning even though I thought there weren’t any WiFi routers around. Today I made sure there couldn’t be any other WiFi sources around, and it failed. So I’m sorry if I got anyone’s hopes up. I thought I had eliminated extraneous variables but I had not.

As a side note, it should still be possible to get GPS location using third-party hardware, like how the iPod touch can use the GPS car docks.

when GPS fails

Mar 31, 2010 gps navigation

I always take my Android phone with when I go running. I have the My Tracks App. That’s how I keep track of distance/speed/elevation etc. It can automatically upload my stats to Google Docs and Google Maps. A couple of weeks ago my myTouch 3G’s GPS just wouldn’t get a satellite fix – I thought “I’ll just start running – since I’m outdoors it’ll find where I’m in a minute or two”. Well I was wrong. Google claimed this was where I ran that day (make sure you zoom out a few levels):

View Track 70 in a larger map

It looks like I was running up to 350mph at times while being 4000ft under the ocean (click red end point to see stats). Wow. I believe that’s faster than Usain Bolt!

So anyhow the next day I turned my GPS again for some maps and had the same issue. Then I thought it was time for a reboot. No problems with getting a GPS fix since then.

If you have some crazy tracks like this please share.
