ultimate car black box

This is the Ace Antenna A DR-200. It is a black box for driving. We came across this on a Korean site that we really have no way deciphering.

However the features of this device is pretty apparent from all the pics. It mounts on your windshield and has two cameras. One facing the road, the other facing the inside of the vehicle. Inside camera seems to have some sort of night vision capability as well. It has an integrated GPS receiver, and a microphone too.

This device is literally recording your every move, every word, and it knows where you are.

To be more specific – as can be seen in the screenshot of the software it records the road in front of you, it records the inside of the vehicle and using the GPS receiver puts you on Google Maps and records how fast you were going at what time. And finally the audio recording from inside can be played along with the rest of the fields.

And if we’re right it even has a 3G module to transmit your location/video/audio in real time…. this is just too much.

should personal GPS jammers be legalized?

We haven’t posted a new poll in a while so here is a brand new one. We’re not talking about GPS jammers that can interfere with satellite signals miles and miles away. We’re only talking about mini GPS jammers only powerful enough to jam signals in and around your vehicle and plugs into your cigarette lighter. Or a even a battery operated one that you can carry with you if you’re paranoid about “them” turning on the GPS in your phone and following you around.

I mean the government didn’t ask us if they could beam satellite signals on to our houses and backyards and cars, so why should we need their permission to interfere with these signals.. (OK I realize that’s a weak argument…) There are many things to consider here… A GPS jammer can be used by car thieves to disable LoJack or OnStar or similar systems. If legalized airlines may start asking us “please turn off all portable electronics including GPS jammers” since they are starting to use GPS data as a guide for landings already.

So anyways, cast your vote, make a comment. Let us know what you think.

yes - legalize GPS jammers no - keep them illegal

3 Non-Navigational Ways to Use Your GPS Tracking System

Have you been thinking about installing a GPS tracking system in your car?  While easy navigation is an obvious benefit, have you considered the other advantages of a GPS system?

1.) Roadside Assistance

If you happen to be traveling down the road and notice that your vehicle is experiencing issues or it breaks down entirely, a GPS tracking system can give you a piece of mind by knowing all it takes is the simple push of a button to call for help.  Most systems today have easily accessible buttons that allow you to instantly contact emergency services or find the nearest auto service facility.

2.) Instant Help

One of the best attributes of satellite navigation is the feature that acts as a panic button.  In TomTom devices, this feature is called Help Me! and can be used in case of an emergency.  This may range from situations such as a fender bender or serious car accident.  If you are in a safe environment, the GPS service carrier will speak with you and help manage with the situation.  However, if it is determined that your safety is at risk, they will immediately contact the authorities on your behalf.

3.) Safety and Reassurance

A GPS tracking device can give a peace of mind to many parents.  If you lend the car out to your teenager for the night, a good satellite navigation system will provide you with the ability to call and check the exact whereabouts of the vehicle and your child.  Best of all, this can all be done discreetly.  You don’t have to interfere with their plans when you are simply trying to ensure their safety.

Get Your Money’s Worth

There are many benefits to having a GPS tracking system, but before you make an investment, be sure that you understand what you are getting for your money.  It is vital that you find out exactly what options are covered in your plan along with any monthly fees that may apply.  After finding a solution that is right for you, be sure to have the satellite navigation system implemented by a certified installer to get the most for your money and all the functionality the unit has to offer.

Doh! Homer Simpson Says You Missed a Right Hand Turn

There is no denying that satellite navigation systems and GPS technology have come a long way over the years.  With GPS’ immense popularity, it is no surprise that a large number of users are increasingly looking for ways to personalize their GPS units.  To meet these fast growing demand, leading manufacturers such as TomTom have introduced solutions designed to satisfy this evolving demographic of users.  Many sat nav device owners now have the ability to customize their units by changing the default voices to something a little more entertaining.

TomTom XL 340 Review

The XL represents the new breed of TomTom devices to sport the slimmed-down cradle unit.  Its EasyPort mount design serves as a major benefit to drivers who were previously fed up with the chunky cradles and curved armatures that generally accompanied sat nav units.  Unlike older devices, the TomTom XL twists in and out of a circular shaped retaining bracket.  It can also be angled forward at your leisure to ensure that the screen is clearly visible.  Design aside, the biggest attraction of this unit is all the innovative features it brought forth.

Key Features and Functionality

One of the standout features of the TomTom XL is MapShare.  This functionality allows users to note and mark changes to their mapped routes.  These alterations can then be shared through the company’s web portal, TomTom Home. To ensure accuracy, the user-submitted edits are verified before being made publicly available.  By frequently logging on to the web portal and incorporating the latest map updates, you can make sure you always have the most accurate and up to date maps.  With TeleAtlas signed on formally as a subsidiary company of TomTom, the celebrated GPS manufacturer has been able to consistently stay ahead of the competition by delivering its users the freshest maps available.

In addition to MapShare, the TomTom XL unit is also equipped with a feature known as IQ Routes.  This one collects real-traffic data from TomTom users to determine exactly how fast traffic will move along on any given road at a certain time of day.  Because so much data has been collected by so many users, TomTom IQ Routes have become incredibly accurate over the years.  Several tests up and down the countryside and through various routes have shown this feature to be uncannily efficient.  The TomTom XL paved the way for an array of features that have become standard on many of the newer TomTom sat nav units.

Conclusion

If you are planning a journey coming from the downtown area of your town and need to arrive in the suburbs to the west - while knowing whether or not it’s quicker to take the back roads or head straight through the center - the time-based advice offered by this device can be extremely helpful.  Even in the midst of grueling rush hour traffic, having a reliable sat nav unit the likes of the TomTom XL can enable you to negotiate all the back streets and shortcuts to keep the stress to a minimum.

TomTom Go 940 Live Review

Many view TomTom as the sat nav industry’s version of leading technology companies, such as Apple or Sony.  Much of this acclaim is centered on the flagship TomTom Go 940 Live, which is arguably one of the most complete satellite navigation systems to date (check it out here or more sat navs from TomTom here).  While it still sports the comprehensive, easy to read interface we have all come to expect, it is the addition of various LIVE services that truly elevate the 940 to new heights.

Key Features and Functionality

The most innovative of the LIVE features would have to be HD traffic.  Instead of depending on unreliable RDS traffic updates, TomTom gathers position, speed and direction of cell phone signals to efficiently calculate where traffic is accumulating or has stopped entirely.  This data is beamed to your TomTom Go 940 Live every three minutes, re-routing your journey on an as-needed basis.

Where Would GPS be Without the Government?

Espionage, secret agents and conspiracy theories are just a few of the many elements that come to mind when integrating modern technology with the government.  When GPS initially started gaining steam, “big brother” conspiracy theories abound.  Today, however, GPS is simply another example of how technology is being used to enhance both military and civilian operations.

Let’s give credit where credit is due - without the government’s involvement, satellite navigation and GPS wouldn’t be what we know it as today.  In fact, it is rather clear to see what the government’s role has been in the past and the current day, both of which give indication of what it could be in the future as well.

How a TomTom GPS System Really Works

Although you might understand the basic functionality, you may still be curious to know what makes your TomTom GPS device tick.  Whether you own a TomTom 940 or XL, each device consists of two major components: hardware and software.  There is small computer in your sat nav receiver that makes sure the software runs efficiently.  Depending on your TomTom model (if you don’t have one yet, choose your sat nav here), the software is either located on the hard disk or an SD card.  With most devices, the hard disk itself has a capacity of at least 20 GB.

GPS Device Tips for Newbies: Getting from Point A to Point B Safely

A satellite navigation system could spell the difference between wandering frightened and aimlessly through a dark wooded area and finding your way to the clear path that leads to safety.  Unfortunately, many of us leave the house ill prepared with poor or no direction at all.  This means that we are far more susceptible to getting lost.

The good thing is that getting lost is quickly become an extinct behavior thanks to GPS technology.  With the right unit at your side, you can always know where you are, whether you are traveling a country back road or taking a detour from your normal route.

GSM and GPS Personal Tracking Device

With all the GPS gadgets you can buy, most of them are designed to track vehicles and other large possessions. However, have you ever wanted to just locate an individual person? Thanks to the mobile phone networks, there are mobile phone tracking services that exist. However, tracking someone via the GSM networks only gives you accuracy to around 50 metres or so. Sometimes you get slightly more accurate results in densely populated cities due to the higher density of phone network masts.

The personal tracker from Maplin combines both GSM and GPS technologies in an easy-to-use package. Sold as a device to help monitor vulnerable individuals, it wouldn’t take much imagination to conceal the device as a covert tracking device. The personal tracker has the facility to store up to 3 telephone numbers for emergencies. By pressing one of the pre-set buttons, the person with the tracker can quickly speak to someone at the end of one of those phone numbers.

The tracker also has an SOS button, which when pressed, will send the exact GPS coordinates of the tracker to up to 3 preset mobile phone numbers. The SOS button allows the vulnerable person to send for help, whilst providing rescuers with detailed location information.

If you want to find out the location of the tracker at any time, you simply send a text message to the tracker from any mobile phone. You’ll quickly get a reply with the GPS coordinates of the tracker. Once you have the GPS coordinates via SMS, you simply enter the coordinates into Google Maps or Bing Maps to determine the nearest landmarks and road names.

The personal tracker clearly has a very specific practical application, but it just goes to show how small GPS trackers have become, and how useful they can be!

Covert GPS Tracking: Is It Legal to Track A Person Without Their Knowledge?

GPS Tracking Devices, Personal Tracking Devices

If you are considering using GPS tracking device to track a person, you may be wondering if it is legal to track someone without their knowledge.

While the laws vary from state to state, in general the use of a spy GPS tracking device to track a person without their permission could be illegal or result in a legal action against you.

While small GPS tracking devices (such as UBI 4000 GPS tracking device) can be used for covert tracking, that is not GPS technology is all about. Even when using GPS tracking for safety of children or teenagers, I strongly recommend that they be made aware they are being tracked. This knowledge alone can serve as a sufficient deterrent to any misbehavior. Remember, that technology is not a subsitute for common sense such as teaching your children about personal safety, being a safe driver, etc. Also, never let technology replace your own judgment.

GPS technology makes it easy to track your employees for safety and efficiency reasons. It’s important to explain to your employees in a manner that allows them to understand the business savings and benefits of incorporating a personal GPS tracking system, and is not designed to compromise their privacy and integrity.

As GPS technology improves and the range of GPS devices and accessories grow, uses of GPS tracking devices will increase, while the prices will become more and more affordable. So whether you are looking for car or marine GPS, GPS accessories, cellular GPS, cheapest GPS tracking device, smallest GPS, or just want more tips for buying the right GPS tracing device for your needs, this GPS Tracking Device Reviews Blog can be a good source of information.

Deterrence vs. Recovery with GPS Tracking

GPS Tracking Devices

by James Neely / guest author

If potential perpetrators know about the existence of GPS Tracking devices and do not follow through on their intents, then deterrence is realized. However, most of these devices are hidden and therefore do not present a good deterrence to theft of property.

What they do accomplish, however, is to help locate an item to within a few feet of its actual location and report that to the owner.

Here’s why recovery is the best use of GPS Tracking devices:

Busy Police Agencies

Because of difficult economic times, incidents of serious crime are on the rise. The result of this is that it causes lesser cases of theft to be shoved to the back of investigators desks. Police agencies are stretched thin and resources are difficult to find. They would rather find a stolen item and return it right away instead of having to investigate a difficult and long term case that may or may not provide enough evidence to find the perpetrators and make an arrest.

Near-Instant Recovery

GPS Tracking provides location information which can be passed on to local authorities for almost instant recovery. This is a great alternative to having to wait while authorities attempt to find the perpetrators through evidence that might or might not be available.

Insurance Premium Reduction

Many insurance companies will provide a reduction in premiums if a GPS Tracking device is installed into a vehicle. They reduce their risk and so are willing to pass along savings to insured persons in return. This makes is possible to recover your initial investment in a device over time.

GPS Tracking devices are affordable for businesses or individuals as well. They are perfect in tracking cars, boats, four-wheelers, snowmobiles, jet skis, campers, trailers and more.

Do you need to substantiate actions? Tracking where you or others have been in vehicles that are equipped with a tracking device is the best way to go about this task. Employees or family members can be tracked and reports generated that also provide speed data as well.

Why GPS Tracking is needed for Sex Offenders

GPS Tracking Devices, Personal Tracking Devices

by James Neely / guest author

The debate rages about whether GPS tracking of sex offenders is a good thing or not.  Meanwhile, incidents like the one in San Diego in which a teen girl was abducted and killed by a sex offender keep occurring with nightmarish regularity.

Sex offenders must be tracked while they are under a court judgment.  That is the bottom line.  Whether recidivism rates are low among them or not is not an issue.  The issue is the safety of citizens in our communities.

A GPS tracking device used in this manner must be viewed as part of the solution to help insure safety, not as an infringement upon rights.  When one is found guilty of a sex crime, their rights must be taken away as a result of their actions.

GPS tracking provides an effective method in the enforcement of court judgments against any who are convicted of crimes.

House Arrest

GPS tracking has been used for years in the form of ankle bracelets to enforce sentences of house arrest on those whose circumstances allow for this type of situation.  The only exceptions for remaining in the house are for work related activities.  Tracking helps ensure that these guidelines are being followed.

Location Verification

Sex offenders are required by law in most states to register their presence and address in the communities in which they live even after their sentence has been served.  Often, this does not happen.  So, here’s a valid question:  why shouldn’t sex offenders be required to wear a GPS tracking device for life?  The great thing about GPS tracking is that it knows state or local boundaries.

As a Part of a Program

GPS Tracking in this way must be a part of a larger effort to keep track of sex offenders and continue to work towards their eventual healing from their addiction.  But, make no mistake, once a person has committed a sexual offense, there must never be a time that defenses are dropped in thinking that they will not commit another act.

Community Safety

Being able to move freely within our communities with little concern for the safety and welfare of citizens is of utmost importance.  As methods and technologies are developed to help insure this goal, we must embrace them to help make sure that they have every opportunity to provide what we need.

GPS Tracking is becoming an important part of these methods and will continue to help make sure that sexual predators are kept away from those who are vulnerable.

Burglars Caught Red-Handed with GPS Tracking

one of which is the GPS tracking device.  GPS tracking devices utilize satellites in space that receive information and transmit it back to earth to various receivers.  These devices can be installed in a car with or without the owner’s knowledge.  GPS tracking devices can locate a car in real time, which means that you can watch it en route on your computer, or you can remove the device and read the car’s travel history.  Either way, GPS tracking devices are helpful pieces of electronic technology.

GPS tracking devices are especially helpful when tracking cars that belong to people with questionable activities.  One example of this was recently reported in Hutchinson, Kansas.  There was a serial burglar on the loose, and the police had a hunch who the culprit was, but they needed to be sure.  The Hutchinson police department received a court order to place a GPS tracking device on the car belonging to the couple in question.

The suspected burglars had no idea that the tracking device was on their car, and their activity level and patterns reflected just that.  The police received an exact location of the perpetrators and their car every five minutes, and they were in the vicinity of a series of seven homes that were robbed in one afternoon.

The information about the car that the police received was enough to send the case to court.  This gives the police a chance to prosecute this couple and put an end to the serial burglaries.  The GPS tracking device is the true hero in this situation.  It was able to catch the burglars in action and put them at the scene of the crime.

While the police were able to receive information every five minutes as to where the serial burglars were, there is another way to use tracking devices.  If you do not have the time to watch a vehicle in real time, you can simply take the removable tracking device off the car and connect it to your computer.  You can easily look at details about the car’s usage; you can see where and when it was driven, as well as the location of stops and the speeds at which it drives.  This capability also comes in handy to the police who find GPS to be an effective crime fighting tool.

GPS Car Tracking Devices Can Save Money: Lower Insurance Premiums, Reduce Mileage with GPS Trackers, and More

GPS Tracking Devices, GPS Vehicle Tracking Device

A penny saved is a penny earned, and in these harsh economic times, we’ll use all the pennies we can get. Some people may have purchased a car tracking device just because the device is useful and pretty slick, but perhaps they can get the technology to pay for itself. Here are a few options.

1. Lower insurance premiums. GPS trackers are primarily safety and recovery devices, which insurance companies love. Car drivers should take advantage by asking their agent how a GPS tracker installed in their car might lower the monthly rate. At least a dozen states already have laws requiring insurance carriers to lower premiums for those with anti-theft devices installed on their property.

But for plenty of carriers, the state regulations merely reinforce common business sense. Many companies will do what they can to encourage someone to put a theft deterrent and recovery aid on any vehicle for which they’ve assumed financial risk.

2. Reduce mileage. GPS trackers are great tools for driving behavior retrospection. Mapping a car’s routes over the past month may reveal some significant waste in gas and time
